How Tariff-Induced Market Gyrations Will Affect Real Estate

Q: How do you think the market gyrations from tariffs will affect real estate? Eli, Lakewood, NJ
A: Tariffs on building materials can significantly impact real estate markets by increasing construction costs and raising home prices. Tariffs are taxes on imported goods that add to the cost of materials like steel, lumber, and drywall, which are then passed on to consumers in the form of higher home prices. The uncertainty caused by tariffs, coupled with the increased costs, can also lead to delays in construction projects and potentially reduce the overall supply of new homes, further pushing up prices. The long term effects of the on-again, off-again tariffs that have roiled financial markets recently are difficult to predict because there’s no telling where the tariffs will ultimately settle and because it’s now clear that there wasn’t a lot of thought put into the planning of the tariffs before they were unleashed (i.e. tariffs placed on the Mcdonald Islands which are populated entirely by penguins and seals). Tariffs on imported goods, which include building materials, can negatively impact real estate markets by increasing home prices, causing construction delays and by reducing home supply.
