7 Things To Never Put Into A Garbage Disposal

Q: I think one of our kids somehow damaged our garbage disposal. What do you think happened? Kenny, North Arlington, NJ
A: I’m not a big fan of garbage disposals because they give people a false sense of security and encourage them to act recklessly. There are many items that can create clogs or cause damage if you put them into a garbage disposal. Here is a list of 7 things you should never put into a garbage disposal:
- Bones & Shells (can’t be ground safely)
- Coffee grounds (clump and form clogs)
- Fruit pits (can’t be ground)
- Corn husks & and celery (catch in the disposal blades)
- Grease (hardens in pipes)
- Large pieces of food (often form clogs)
- Starchy foods like pasta, rice, beans, and oatmeal (can expand when wet and cause clogs)
Thanks for your question, Kenny.
