3 Ways To Prevent Mold In a Home

Performance Property Real Estate Question

Q: I’ve noticed mold has been building up in my Aunt’s home. What’s the best way to fix the problem and prevent mold from building up in the future? Judy, Kenilworth, NJ

A: Mold in a house is typically caused by moisture and the presence of mold spores. The most common source of moisture in a home is leaks. Mold thrives on organic materials like drywall and wood and mold can also build up on carpet and ceiling tiles when moisture is present. Here are 3 ways to prevent mold from building up in a home:

  1. Use a dehumidifier in damp areas of a home to keep humidity levels low
  2. Ventilate areas where moisture builds up–open windows when possible, use exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms to prevent moisture from building up by keeping areas throughout a home dry
  3. Clear home gutters regularly to prevent water from pooling
